WWW Wednesday: 8 August 2018

The WWW Wednesday meme was formerly hosted by MizB at A Daily Rhythm and revived by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words. It’s a great way to do a weekly update on what you’ve been reading and what you have planned. To take part all you have to do is answer the following three questions:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?

Currently Reading:  The Rival Queens: Catherine de’ Medici, her daughter Marguerite de Valois, and the Betrayal That Ignited a Kingdom by Nancy Goldstone

This is a non-fiction book but it is beautifully written and the pace is sustained. It is also accurately researched and conveys more than well the vipers’ nest that was the French court during the Religion Wars. Said that, I must disagree with the portrait Goldstone presents of Caterina de Medici. As other complex personalities of that period, she was often misunderstood by contemporaries and victim of a black legend that continues to the present day.

Recently finished: The Accursed Kings (I-III) by Maurice Druon

I have read this French masterpiece (that GRRM defined ‘the real Game of Thrones’) many years ago in French (aka Les Rois Maudits) and I’ve recently decided to re-read it, this time in English. This one is a fairly good translation, and it presents the first three volumes of the long series.

Reading Next: Bird Box by Josh Malerman

This is a reading suggestion I got from a fellow blogger, and what I heard so far is that this debut novel is a great psychological thriller. Logline: “Most people dismissed the reports on the news. But they became too frequent; they became too real. And soon it was happening to people we knew.” I can’t wait!

Have you read any of these books or something in kind this week? Please feel free to leave comments and links below.

Excellent post matey! Bird box is one the list to read. And I am a bit obsessed with the Medici family. Just read a history of the family that was excellent.

I am determined to read Bird Box someday! I’ve had a copy for a few years but it keeps getting buried under my huge TBR, lol. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I love the sound of The Rival Queens, though taking on board your comments regarding Catherine de Medici. I hope you enjoy all these books – Bird Box sounds intriguing, but probably a bit dark for my taste.

I just began, last weekend, Margaret Atwood’s “The Year of the Flood.” I enjoyed “Oryx and Crake” and this is the sequel. There’s a third book also in this series. I just really love to read Atwood’s prose.
