It was the quieter Martian landing ever. From the US Pathfinder’s descent to the Martian surface that focused the world’s attention (and blew up the Internet) in 1997, we got used to following all Martian attempts in real life or so. Not the case with China, which landed on the Utopia Planitia in the early hours of Saturday, Beijing time, when all the Western world was still eating their dinner or deep asleep.
Makes no mistakes. Quiet or not, it was an amazing achievement. This is the only rover, apart from the NASA ones, to manage it. It deserves all kudos it can get, and more, because it nailed the task on its first attempt.
Looking at where the ones still in activity are now, maybe it’s time to call a rover summit.
