Like everyone else who followed the Berserk saga for over a decade or so (for some people it is even longer than that), I wondered what was going to happen after the sudden and untimely death of Kentaro Miura. And like everyone else, I feared we would never get a proper ending. It looks like, I was worried for the wrong reasons.
Because the saga is continuing. Dark Horse has just released volume #42 in September 2023, with the latest published chapters on Young Animals, and the first one since Miura’s passing. Point is, who’s writing them?
Hakushenka, the manga’s publisher, announced that Berserk will be authored by Kouji Mori, who’s Miura’s childhood and apparently one of the few who knows everything about the saga, including its ending.
Volume #42 table of contents includes these new chapters:
- 365. “Lull of a Waning Moon” (十六夜のしじま, Izayoi no Shijima)
- 366. “Eye of the Maelstrom” (潮流の目, Maerusutoromu no Me)
- 367. “Mistful Fading of the Cherry Blossoms” (桜散霧消, Ōsanmushō)
- 368. “Devourers” (蝕む者たち, Mushibamu Monotachi)
- 369. “Fading Isle” (泡沫の孤島, Utakata no Kotō)
- 370. “Refugees on the Western Sea” (西海の流民, Saikai no Ryūmin)
- 371. “A Dying Light in the Pitch Black Night” (狭き暗夜に消ゆる灯火, Semaki An’ya ni Kiyuru Tomoshibi)
- 372. “The Red Raven Sleeps in the Birdcage” (赤の渡鴉は鳥籠で眠る, Aka no Watarigarasu wa Torikago de Nemuru)
- 373. “Rusted Iron Bands Unable to Push On” (歩みかなわぬ錆びた鉄輪, Ayumi Kanawanu Sabita Kanawa)
while you can read online the latest one, which will be included in the next volume.
How good are the post-Miura chapters? There are a lot of discussions in the fandom about this right now, and I’ll address them in a separate post. I’d say if you are a Berserk lover, you need to look at them first and decide if any ending is better than no ending. Happy reading.
Looks like it’s in the best hands.
