War in Europe

Like many other Europeans, I am horrified to see my continent in the middle of war again.

Any war is awful, of course. But Europe has been literally built over millions of deaths, including two World Wars that have risked destroying the entire planet. Haven’t we learnt anything from the past? Is it a curse that history has to repeat itself?

Tomorrow, I will get back to my life, and work, and writing. But tonight, I take a moment to watch what we Europeans are giving up –something we took for granted. Peace. I damn hope we have a good reason for that.

As the mother of two young men, I am terrified.

Yes. I’m not sure I fear more for my own children or for the bleak future we’re preparing for all the children out there. As if the climate change were not enough 🙁

I hear you, Steph. And I feel as powerless as ever to make a real difference, to make things better.

Same here. I keep staring at the news like a rabbit in front of an incoming truck.

War is waged by nations, but it is human beings that pay the price for it. Let’s hope that this conflict is soon resolved without the loss of more lives. Hope springs eternal…..and that’s we can do…..hope!

Yes, you’re right. Humans always pay the price, which is why history is such a grim reading at times. 🙁

I vacillate between horror and disgust. The best thing I heard today was that there were Russian soldiers in Ukraine who had stopped fighting and stood down in protest of being “misinformed” about what they were supposed to be doing there. May more of them do the same. I am inspired by the Ukrainians and fervently hope that they prevail.

Yes. I also think to all those who protest in Russia against the war who got arrested and jailed. This is not their war, and they’re paying the price, too.

We seem indeed unable to learn from the past – it’s as if our collective memory were periodically erased so that we can make the same mistakes all over again….
