Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Books and a Beat.
Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
“We’re not hunter-gatherers anymore. We’re all living like patients in the intensive care unit of a hospital, and what keeps us alive isn’t bravery, or athleticism, or any of those other skills that were valuable in a caveman society; It’s our ability to master complex technological skills – it is our ability to be nerds.”
(~ Seveneves, by Neal Stephenson, 2015, Kindle Edition)
[Note: Nominated for 2016 Hugo Awards for Best Novel.]
PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT with either the link to your own Teaser Tuesdays post, or share your ‘teasers’ in a comment here and/or in Books and a Beat’s blog.
Hm. I’ve seen this one around – my experiences with Stephenson have been mixed. There are times when his storytelling seems to get trumped by his need to get his message across – are you enjoying this one? Mine is far fluffier – yeehah! https://sjhigbee.wordpress.com/2016/08/23/teaser-tuesday-23rd-august-2016/
Hello, thanks the link. I agree about your view on Stephenson, by the way, but I couldn’t resist to have a go at this one. 🙂
Nerds rule the world.
Mine is a fun read from one of Lisa Scottoline’s legal murder mysteries: https://wp.me/p3Nz8P-K8
Hello, thanks for that – I love mysteries 🙂
That sure grabs ya! Now you have me curious. I like reading about group dynamics.
My TT from Bayou Shadow Hunter
Thanks, this one might interest you, too, I believe, or at least parts of it. 🙂
The first time I heard of this one was when I read the list of Hugo nominees. I hope you are enjoying it. My teaser this week comes from Magic & Manners by C. E. Murphy. Happy reading!
Thanks Kathy, as it happened it didn’t make to the Award (but it was allegedly difficult to beat NK Jemisin). Enjoyable, though.
“Seveneves” is on my to read list. Here’s mine:
“One by one, they entered the abandoned City Hall station. The original light fixtures were empty, but someone had attached an electrical cable to the wall and run it to a dozen bulbs.”
“The Dark River” by John Twelve Hawks. This is book 2 of a trilogy that began with “The Traveler.” Hawks’ focus is on The Vast Machine of surveillance and how one group, the Brethren, want to control all life on earth through surveillance. The Travelers are people with supernatural powers and able to stop the Brethren so they are an endangered people. I’m really enjoying the trilogy despite the paranoia. It’s fun.
Hello Cinda, many thanks – this looks indeed interesting and one I could certainly like. 🙂
Stephenson is one of those authors that have dwelled for a while now on my “next” list, but I’ve always felt some sort of… awe/apprehension/whatever about tackling his novels. So I will take your post as a reminder, and see if I can make good on my plans! 🙂
Hello, I understand what you mean, and, to be honest, I have rarely heard so many contrasting views about an author as in Stephenson’s case. To me, however, this book is well worth the effort 😉
Sounds amusing …
