The Years of Rice and Salt Quotes (2002) is a Kim Stanley Robinson’s speculative fiction novel. It’s one of the most convincing examples of alternate history – set in a world where the Black Death in 1348 has killed 99% of world population – and spans across one century. Divided in 10 sections, it explores themes of history, politics and non-Western cultures. Complex, fascinating, addictive. Nominated for 2003 Hugo Award for Best Novel.
I’ve heard amazing things about this book. Have you read it?
As a matter of fact, more than once. It’s one of my favourites re:alternate history. It requires a bit of background knowledge (and interest) in non-Western cultures, and at times it can be challenging. But I do love it, and I can’t recommend it enough 🙂
I do like the sound of this – I’m a sucker for alternate history and find the periods during the plague fascinating. This does look like a massive book though – I’m guessing you have to be in the right kind of mood!
Lynn 😀
Yes, it is, and some sections can be sort of a headache. More than about the mood, I would worry about the time (plenty of) 😀
