Chasm City (2001) by Alastair Reynolds is a hard SF novel set in the universe of Revelation Space series. It portrays what remains of a glorious human civilisation in space that had collapsed when a an alien virus, the so-called Melding Plague, has ravaged its core. Dark and post-apocalyptic, the novel asks fundamental questions about humanity and immortality. Not for the faint-hearted. The novel won the BSFA Award.
I love your books reviews – they’re like reviews in a nutshell! They’re great. I have a book by this author – have you read any of his others? I have Blue Remembered Earth but haven’t read it yet.
Lynn 😀
Hello Lynn, thanks. I’ve read the whole Revelation Space series and I simply love Reynolds. Right now busy with the ARC of Poseidon Wakes – the last one of the series Poseidon’s Children started with the book you have on your shelf – and I’m going to post a more detailed review about it soon. He has also written short stories, you might want to begin with them to see if you like his style. But Chasm City is a good starting point to get to know his work.
