XXI CENTURY SCI-FI – Parasite by Mira Grant

Parasite (2013) by Mira Grant/ Seanan McGuire is an interesting blend of techno-thriller, horror and SF. It features a near-future humanity made virtually disease-free by a gentle, genetically engineered parasite living symbiotically with its human hosts. It’s easy to figure out what can (and will) go wrong here, but it makes for a compelling and fast-paced reading nonetheless. Shortlisted for the 2014 Hugo Award Best Novel.

I have to say I’ve enjoyed but preferred the Newsflesh Trilogy. This one in some parts lacks internal consistency. But the whole idea is great and Seanan has done her research re: the scientific part. Now reading the sequel.
