Spin (2005) by Robert Charles Wilson, describes a future Earth that a race of powerful aliens, the Hypotheticals, have put in protective cocoon – the so-called spin membrane – that shelters but also isolates it from the rest of a dangerous Universe. Beautifully written, original and compelling. The first book in the Spin trilogy, followed by Axis (2007) and Vortex (2011), Spin won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2006.
