Triangle (2009). A review.

If you stumble upon Triangle (I don’t think you’re going to search for it. At least, I didn’t, because I’ve never heard of it until yesterday) and you decide to give it a try, chances are you’ll find it pretty weird. [Disclaimer: it’s true in this period I’m reviewing more movies than books. It’s because I’m doing a lot of admin – teaching is over for the term -and the only way to survive is to watch something at the same time *just kidding*]

The film, a British-Australian production directed by Christopher Smith [do you remember Black Death? That was a good one indeed] tells a deceptively simple story. A group of friends (one of which, the MC, is the single mother of an autistic son) leaves on a boating trip,  get caught in a storm that destroys the sailboat and they end up boarding a ghost ocean liner, with apparently nobody there. Except that somebody is there…the earlier version of them. From here, things get weirder and weirder.

I won’t say anything more to avoid spoilers, apart from the fact it reminds Memento in some good moments and typical oceanic horror like Ghost Ship in others. It was better I’d imagined when I got what was going on, even though some of the details appear forced to fit the narrative. But I overall agree with the Guardian: “it is a rather smart, interestingly constructed scary movie from British director Christopher Smith (Creep, Severance) set in the US: a supernatural time-shift chiller perhaps inspired by Donnie Darko.” [ Read the whole review here.]

Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie positive reviews from 82%of the sample, which is not that bad. If anything, I’d say I found the ending not completely satisfactory in logical terms, but the mind-warping, creepy atmosphere made it a movie worth watching.

Triangle (2009) is available on Netflix UK now. Here’s the trailer:

An intriguing review, Steph. I probably won’t get to see it – we haven’t been to the cinema for far too long, but hopefully maybe over the Christmas holidays I’ll get a chance to see a film:)

Yes… though these days, I’ve so much stuff stacked up on the TV waiting for me to watch it, I could never justify it!
