Anime on Netflix – a few favourites

After having reviewed Castelvania on this blog, I’ve received a few questions about which anime are worth watching on Netflix. Difficult to answer, since the offer is now quite rich and you have something for all tastes. This one is a quick pick – just to give an idea of what is out there. I have already planned a review of the others mentioned in this list, but in the meantime, you can start watching one or two.

Castelvania – please see the review here. A good start if you have never watched anime before (for the reasons I’ve discussed in my review.) Now waiting for Season 2.

Psyco-Pass – one of the most famous “recent” anime, featuring a sort of Minority Report universe of a more vicious typology, and with some truly amazing characters. With the Gundam franchise, it’s probably my favourite one.

Knight of Sidonia– If you can figure out how Starship Troopers would be in a anime setting, search no further. As a bonus, a fantastic animation and some nice combat scenes.

Death Note – Another dark one, similar to Psyco-Pass in terms of genre (it’s a psychological thriller), but more fantasy-based than SF and less philosophically profound. The sociopath protagonist is an interesting character, but there’s nothing in the show comparable to Shogo Makishima (Psyco-Pass’s most charming villain).

Ajin – Like Castlevania and the Knights of Sidonia, a Netflix production. Ajin (demi-humans) are immortal lifeforms, rather mysterious and difficult to find. A high school student discovers that he is an Ajin when he is killed in a traffic accident but comes back to life, and he must flee from the scientists who want to experiment on him. I’m still watching this one, therefore I suspend the verdict until the end. For the moment, I’m enjoying though.

For the full list of anime currently available on Netflix (which, however, changes depending on which country you’re based at the moment), go check this link from time to time.

Thank you for this useful roundup – my granddaughter is very much into anime so it’s handy to know which ones are age appropriate, Steph:).

Thanks -I have to say the ones on Netflix are quite dark, at least the ones on the channel Anime. Probably it’s a safer option selecting the Kids channel and then browsing what they offer in there. 🙂

Ah… thank you for the heads-up, Steph. This is entirely new territory for me – and obviously I want to get it right!

Yes, not that easy, I agree -especially now that the genre has become more popular in the West. If in doubt, send me a quick email, and I’ll let you know 🙂
