Today is the moment of my periodic summary of space news worth discussing this week (and in the past few, since I haven’t done it in a while). This one features a startling discovery and other interesting topics. As usual, links and a couple of comments included.
NASA Just Found A Solar System With 7 Earth-Like Planets
Yes, this one is actually huge, announced both by ESA and NASA. Not only the system contains all Earth-sized planets, but if the team is right, the six innermost of them are Earth-like rocky worlds. The best thing? This star system is right next door – only 40 LY away.
Dark Matter in Andromeda Galaxy
While disputes continue about what dark matter actually is, it seems we’ve found it in the Milky Way’s twin, Andromeda.
Lifeforms that have been living inside crystals for up to 60,000 years revived by NASA. It looks good for alien life.
Scientists readying to create first image of a black hole
Well, this actually looks amazing, considering that you can feel black hole’s gravitational force but not seeing it. It’s an ongoing project started 20 years ago and it aims at getting imagery of the one believed to be at the centre of the Milky Way —Sagittarius A*.
Can’t really wait!
The announcement about the discovery of those seven planets gave an enormous boost to my sense of wonder: we might not know anything concrete soon, probably not in my lifetime, but for someone like me, who has long dreamed of other worlds out there in space, that was an emotionally-charged moment indeed… 🙂
