Blade Runner 2049. Not (yet) a review.

… simply because the movie is going to premiere on 6 October 2017 and I’ll need to wait until that day. But I make no mystery about the fact this is going to be the event of the year – for me as for thousands of people that believe this is the SF movie par excellence, beating even Matrix, Alien or any Star Wars (I know I’m inviting troubles saying such a thing: but movies are like lovers, each person has his/her own standards/ darlings. And while I love the others I’ve just mentioned, Blade Runner for me will always be the One).

Today I just want to share the official trailer, which is an interesting teaser in terms of atmosphere and information about what we can expect from this most awaited sequel.

First of all, actors: I have to say I’m quite happy to see Ryan Gosling in the cast, and I had expected to see Harrison Ford playing what remains of Deckard. The official synopsis says:

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.”

If this rings a bell, you’re right: the timeline gap mirrors somehow Star Wars – The Force Awaken, with Deckard gone missing (like Luke) since 30 years.

What’s the (horrible) secret K discovers? It’s probably related to the million-dollar-question about Deckard being a replicant (or not). In the trailer we can see an aged Deckard: does it mean he was human, after all? I don’t think so – and if the director has actually gone into this direction, I’d be very, *very* disappointed (because what’s the whole point of the unicorn, then?). But maybe this is just because Deckard’s kind of replicant was more sophisticated and, like Rachel, without a fixed expiry date. We’ll see.

Final note: the director is not Ridley Scott – executive producer – but Denis Villeneuve – yes, the guy who made Arrival (I’ll post a review on this amazing movie from Ted Chiang’s Story of Your Life shortly), and this is a good news. I trust him to do a great job here, where the stakes are so high. If you want to follow the following trailers (they’re going to release more as the date of the official US release approaches, bookmark the official website of the movie: Blade Runner 2049.

In the meantime, we can (re)watch this one. No matter if I know this dialogue by heart, it always gives me shivers.

I’m so relieved Ridley Scott is part of the team – it would be so easy to make a mess of this…

Ah, the white dove taking flight after Roy Batty dies! That scene always gets me…
To say I’m looking forward to the new movie would be the understatement of the century! 🙂
