The Algebraist (2004) by Iain M. Banks, is an SF novel that combines space opera, fantasy and spy story in an overwhelming mix. Set in a non-Culture universe, it features intergalactic space travel, mighty aliens, AIs and ruthless systems, one of which, Mercatoria, is an intriguing example of feudal structures in space. Nominated for the Hugo Award, Best Novel.
