Teaser Tuesday (May 31)

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Books and a Beat.

Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

the-kindly-onesIf you were born in a country or at a time not only when nobody comes to kill your wife and your children, but also nobody comes to ask you to kill the wives and children of others, then render thanks to God and go in peace. But always keep this thought in mind: you might be luckier than I, but you’re not a better person.

( ~ The Kindly Ones by Jonathan Littell, 2006, Kindle Edition)

[Note: The puzzling title refers to an Aeschylus’s tragedy, and sets the tone of this long novel (almost 1,000 pages). Not an easy read, this one, not because it’s difficult, but because it hurts – it starts hitting you hard since the beginning, and it gets as bad as it can be. It’s also a magnificent book, and, even though it came out in 2006, it’s already a classic in its own right. It’s not a surprise that it was awarded (among others) two of the most prestigious French literary awards, the Grand Prix du roman de l’Académie Française and the Prix Goncourt. By the way: if you can, read it in French – the English translation is quite good, the original French is gorgeous and darkly enchanting.]

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT with either the link to your own Teaser Tuesdays post, or share your ‘teasers’ in a comment here and/or in Books and a Beat’s blog.

Oh my word – this sounds a beast in ALL senses! I’m guessing you can read it in the original French? I don’t find, generally, I get on very well with translated books. Often the slightly different cadences keep me on edge so that I don’t relax into the story. But it sounds fantastic – I well recall the myth of Aeschylus and that blurb is fabulous. But… I’m a tad stressed at present so I won’t be going there. Thank you for sharing, though and I look forward to reading your thoughts and impression on this one. My urban fantasy romp is almost cosy in comparison…

Hello, yes, you got it right. It’s my second time (first time when it came out, and I read it in French), now in English (a good translation, I have to say). Going to look at yours…

Sadly, I’m not a huge fan of this type of books. Great teaser though!

This book looks like it might be too heavy a read for me, but thanks for sharing. My teaser can be found at: http://abookaddictsview.blogspot.com/2016/05/teaser-tuesday-joy-of-less.html

Sounds heavy in both senses of the word. I’m glad you are enjoying it. My teaser this week comes from Fan the Flames by Katie Ruggle – a romantic suspense title. Happy reading!

I have to admit to being put off by long books but it sounds like an interesting one. I think it would be the translation though as while I have read books in French when I was in school I’m no where near fluent enough to fully appreciate it. It would be more getting the gist than actually understanding.

Hello Ali, I think even in translation you’ll get a feeling of this author’s amazing writing. 🙂

Sounds like a great story but too heavy for me right now. By the way, I imagine you meant to say that it’s 1,000 PAGES long, not 1,000 WORDS. Right?
