Teaser Tuesday (May 17)

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Books and a Beat.

Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

That’s my choice of the day:images

Species evolve to meet the environment – an intelligent species changes the environment to suit itself. As soon as a species becomes intelligent, it should stop evolving.”

( ~ The Mote in God’s Eye, by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, 1972 , Kindle Edition)

[Note: A SF novel of a first contact. Praised by Heinlein as “possibly the finest science fiction novel I have ever read.” While I’d probably choose something else, it remains a great reading, even today.]

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT with either the link to your own Teaser Tuesdays post, or share your ‘teasers’ in a comment here and/or in Books and a Beat’s blog.

Interesting teaser although I’m not sure you should ever stop evolving.

Thanks Ali for stopping by… the quote is part of a long philosophical discussion in the book about what species do when they evolve. Not that I agree completely either, but it’s definitively compelling.

I read this one years ago. I should revisit it. My teaser this week comes from The Thing Is by Kathleen Gerard. Happy reading!

Thanks Kathy, it’s an old one, but always a good reading. 🙂

That is quite the teaser. It definitely screams truth. Although the only way an intelligent species can grow despite being intelligent, is to keep evolving. Life is, after all, ever changing.

Great choice for your teaser. I’m with the others though. We need to evolve and learn from our mistakes. Great cover art too.

I agree. I need to say, however, that in the book the debate is more complicated, and definitively more ambiguous than it sounds in the quote… Thanks for sharing yours, going to check it.

A great TT, Stephen:). This is one that has somehow eluded me – I think I’ll need to track it down. Mine isn’t sci fi or fantasy for a change… https://sjhigbee.wordpress.com/2016/05/17/teaser-tuesday-17th-may-2016/

It’s turning out to be a highly enjoyable and very quirky read. Jodi Taylor is definitely an author I’ll be reading more of!

    Hi Stephen,

Thanks for stopping by Fiction Books for the first time this week. It is always great to ‘meet’ new people, although I have to confess right off, that science firction is probably my least favourite reading genre and is a growing phenomenon which I simply don’t onderstand 🙂

Your teaser lines this week, were oddly intriguing however, especially coming as they do, from a book first written back in the 70s.

Fellow commenters focus on the thought that we should be continually evolving, as our life patterns are ever-changing. Whilst my own thoughts echo those, I am also wondering just how much of an intelligent species we really are in the first place and will we ever learn to stop fighting amongst ourselves long enough, to be in the position of needing or wanting to grow and evolve … I do wonder sometimes!!

    Thanks for sharing,

    Yvonne 🙂

Hello Yvonne, nice to “meet” you too. While SF is definitively *my* genre, in all its forms and style, I’ve always loved good crime stories and mystery /thrillers, so I’m happy when I can discover new ones, like your TT this week. To be continued… 🙂
