Teaser Tuesday (October 13)

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of A Daily Rhythm.

Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

That’s my choice of the day:  n62731

“Gambling is not a vice, it is an expression of our humanness. We gamble – some do it at the gaming table, some do not. You play, you win, you play, you lose. You play. ”

( ~ The Passion by Jeanette Winterson, 1987, Kindle edition)

[Note: I’ve read this book many years ago, and have recently found it back in my bookshelf. Being a novel I *loved* when reading it the first time, I decided to have a go at it again, to see if my judgement somehow would change. It didn’t. It’s a magnificent book by a magnificent writer, with a gorgeous prose and vivid images. It’s together a great exercise in alternate history, a tragedy and one of the best portraits of Venice I have ever found. It’s no fantasy, but magic pervades every page.]

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT with either the link to your own Teaser Tuesdays post, or share your ‘teasers’ in a comment here and/or in A Daily Rhythm’s blog.

If you like Venice this is by far the best “literary Venice” I have found, and being a Venice-lover, I read a few of them (including the original memories of Casanova…).

Not sure what to think of the cover, but your teaser hits the mark.

I’m not sure why, covers of this book (there have been a few) always managed to disappoint me. They made look it like a romance or something of the sort, while it’s everything but. Thanks for mentioning your TT, I’m going to have a look at it!

The teaser is very good but I can’t say that the cover pulls me. Not sure about this one. Here’s my TT: http://wp.me/p4DMf0-XS

Thanks, I feel the same re: cover, as I said in another comment, always disappointing across editions. But the book is amazing. Thanks for your TT, I’m going to check it out.

I loved your teaser and it’s piqued my interest. I haven’t read The Passion, although I love the author and her writing, so I must track this one down!

Thanks. For me this is the best by Jeanette Winterson, and I have read a few of hers. Also liked Written on the Body and Gut Symmetries – and Orange are not the only fruits was a great start. But The Passion is something different… you won’t be disappointed.

I haven’t read this particular Winterson book, but I do love her writing. It’s nice to be reminded of older books that I’ve missed:-)
